Del Mar International Composers Symposium 2021
With a vision to create a world-class destination for composers to share new music with the public and with each other, composer Jordan Kuspa founded the Del Mar International Composers Symposium (DMICS) in 2019. DMICS exists to encourage the sharing of new musical ideas between composers, performers, and the community, and to present the best new concert music from around the world in the City of Del Mar. In particular, DMICS is designed to allow composers and performers a space to collaborate intimately on the creation and presentation of new works, while inviting the public to experience the creative process first-hand.
For the first time, DMICS 2021 (August 3-11) will welcome a select group of talented composition students to work alongside our Composition Fellows and performing artists. Faculty composers Juri Seo and Jordan Kuspa will lead DMICS students through the creation of new works and students will enjoy working and learning in the beautiful environment of one of California's finest beach towns.
Each composer will enjoy two professional readings of their work by DMICS artists--with time between each reading to allow for revisions and edits. The final readings will be professionally recorded and edited for students to use in their composition portfolios. In addition to working directly with the composition faculty, student composers will also work alongside DMICS Composition Fellows, who will act as mentors and will share their work and expertise with students. Additional sessions on topics such as career strategies, writing for the voice, and advanced ear training will be offered to all students.
Most events will be held on the campus of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar, which is located in the center of town and is less than a 10-minute walk to the beach. There will be ample time to explore Del Mar and San Diego, with time set aside for stunning local hikes, beach relaxation, and other excursions. Composers will stay in a 3-star hotel with a pool and workout room, located only 1.5 miles from Torrey Pines State Beach. Tuition (including double-occupancy room) is $1600, and the deadline to apply is June 1.
